While we obsess over endless mock drafts, expert analysis, and fiery hot takes about who the Patriots should pick, there’s one other crucial draft decision to make—what’s on the menu for the weekend?
Thursday Night: The Big Kickoff
The first round has turned into a must-watch event, and our annual Basement Militia Draft Night has grown into a melting pot of NFL fandom. Last year, our basement was packed with fans rocking Browns, Chargers, Cowboys, Falcons, Giants, and Panthers gear—because nothing brings rival fanbases together like a fresh start and some shared draft-day hope.
With such a diverse crowd, we keep it simple and classic: pizza. The draft was in Detroit last year, so we ordered up some Detroit-style deep dish—but this year, thankfully, we don’t have to go that route.
Friday Night: The Wing Tradition
The 2020 Draft kicked off a new tradition for us—one that started under some pretty unusual circumstances. After weeks of isolation during the pandemic, we projected the draft onto our backyard wall, spaced everyone out at a safe distance, and for the first time in a long time, had fun again.
That night, we ordered a ridiculous amount of wings, and it just felt right. Ever since, Friday night = wings for Rounds 2 and 3. No debate, no substitutions. Since the draft is in Green Bay this year, we’ll add some brats to make sure everyone is nice and full.
Saturday: The Wild Card
By Saturday, it’s a crapshoot—daytime picks mean family events, errands, and life getting in the way. But if we manage to gather, it’s burgers, dogs, or something local on the grill.
For us, Thursday and Friday are the real highlights. The draft brings hope, debate, and tradition, and no matter who the Patriots pick, we’ll be there, well-fed and fired up.
